June-21 2009 Wal-Mart Teams up With FPS to Feed the Pets

FPS volunteer Alice Jensen talked with a Wal-Mart manager in the Charity Department and we are among other pet charities (Lone Pine Animal Rescue, Rogers Shelter, and FPS) who have 55 gallon Rubbermaid bins at Wal-Mart's Warehouse. When pet food trucks come in, the torn bags are given to these charities and when the bin is full Alice brings the bin back to FPS President Laurie Beckman. Laurie puts the dog food into 2 gallon ziplock bags and then other volunteers (Leslie Ray, Jamie Burris and Kimberly Owens) pick it up and deliver it to our regular Best Friends clients on an on-going basis. FPS volunteer Jamie Burris delivers hers to Hillcrest Tower in downtown Fayetteville where all of the residents are seniors on low income or disabled. This is a real win-win for FPS, Wal-Mart, and FPS's Best Friends Clients. For more on the Best Friends Program, see http://for-pets-sake.org/about.php.

We will have four of our foster dogs at the event and FPS volunteers will be there to hand out information and help get the dogs adopted. FPS should make a little money, hopefully get some new volunteers, and place some foster dogs in loving forever homes... what else can we ask for? Thanks Tyson Foods!

June-20 2009 FPS Goes to Woofie Walk!

FPS volunteers participated in Woofie Walk today (June 20) at JB Hunt Park in Springdale. The public was encouraged to bring their pets on leash and pet organizations were there to see and be seen. We had a great opportunity to visit with the friendly folks from Big Wag Bakery, Aussie Mobile Groomers, Springdale Shelter staff and Scout Troop 192. We talked to visitors, played with our own pets and some orphan pets from the shelter. The shelter had at least one dog adopted today. FPS donated two of our Linda Picken art prints to the cause. We handed out brochures and business cards to some people hearing about us for the first time. Fun was had by all and we hope to see some new volunteers as a result of the contacts we made.

May-2 2009 Microchipping Clinic A Success Despite Bad Weather!

Millions of companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of these, only two percent of cats and 15-20% of dogs are reunited with their owners. The best way to avoid this is to ensure your pets have a means to identify them at all times. A collar with tags is a good start, but the best way to ensure your pet's ID doesn't get lost is to microchip your pet. FPS held a microchipping clinic on May 2nd from 9 AM - noon in conjunction with National Ped ID Week at the Rogers Farmers Market. Microchipping was be offered for $15 per pet, which is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the regular cost of microchipping service. This includes registration with Home Again microchipping service. Pet owners register online after their pets are microchipped. The weather was cold and rainy, but the FPS volunteers were there to microchip 8 doggies - that's 8 more doggies who will be found if they ever get lost!

April-29 2009 BYU Students Write Grant for FPS

FPS was the subject of a grant written by a team of students at Brigham Young University. They developed a grant request for a vehicle that FPS can use to haul dogs to pet events, Best Friends clients to vet or groomer, tent and tables, etc to outdoor events, etc. The grant was submitted to Rachel Ray's people at her new dog food line "Neutrish." All proceeds of her line of dog food go to animal charities. We were selected as one of just 8 from a list of 24 non-profits suggested for consideration by the Brigham Young students. We don't know yet if the grant will be approved, but we are very grateful to be chosen for the grant proposal.

The Fall 2006 garage sale fundraiser was a HUGE success! We made a profit of $913.11! We had such a good time, too! We had fun going through all of the marvelous things that were donated by volunteers, Angel Pet Sitters clients, and Tyson team members. We coudn't believe our good
fortune - we took in at least two truckloads of miscellaneous household items, an entertainment center, futon, dining table, chairs, and tons of gorgeous name-brand clothes! It was fun to pull things out of boxes, not having any idea what we would find - almost like Christmas!

Kimberly, Laurie, Edna, Kerry, Mandi, Paula, Heather and Leslie manned the sale, and we had buyers like you wouldn't believe! After two days of working so hard, we're all pretty worn out. Whew! August-21 2005 – August Dog Wash Another Success!

We made $170 at the dog wash yesterday and we probably would have made more if the rain hadn't set in! Still, what we raised more than covers the 501c3 IRS application fees! We had six volunteers for the morning shift: board member Kimberly Owens, Edna Zemites, Paula Jugenheimer, Tom and Shelly Jones, and Leslie Ray. Laurie Beckman, Brandy Fanning, Mandi Bolinger, and Heather Earl worked the afternoon shift and barely beat the rain towards the end of the day! Everyon had a great time! It was hot, but washing the dogs sure helps you cool down!

We had the pleasure of meeting members from three breed-specific rescue organizations: greyhound, great dane, and bassett hound. There were also mixed breeds galore. We are already looking at planning dog washes for 2006 in June, July and August - possibly both in Springdale as well as Fayetteville.

July-19 2005 – One Successful Dog Wash Down, One to Go!

We made $101.01 at the Dog Wash on 7/16/05! The group washed 12 dogs and one "bird poop" from the side of a nice old man's car! Leslie and Laurie appreciate all of the volunteers' help: thanks to Paula, Heather, and Mandi for getting all of the 'hardware' to the site, set up and back to Leslie's house. Paula's balloons looked great! Jamie and Brandy were so great with the customers, made sure we had plenty of shampoo, and made sure everything went smoothly. Brandy is a dog-washing guru! Thanks to Angela and Mandi: you gals are always there when you say you'll be there. Special thanks to Kota who earned his first $1 by washing some bird poop from a nice man's car!

July-03 2005 – Ryan Murphy Memorial Dog Park

The Rogers Humane Society and Paws for a Good Cause announce the groundbreaking of Benton County's first dog park on Sunday July 3rd, 4pm at 201 E. Nursery Rd, Rogers (adjacent to the Rogers Humane Society). The park is being built by Paws for a Good Cause, a non-profit group which benefits animal welfare and animal human bond organizations in Northwest Arkansas, with donations made in memorial for life-time Rogers resident, and dog-lover, Ryan Murphy who passed away last year at the age of 27 after a battle with colon cancer. "We're excited to contribute the land for this park for use by the dog-loving community. It'll be great to see some of the great dogs we've adopted out over the years coming back to the humane society to play. It will remind us there are indeed good endings to the sad stories of animals that come through here." said Humane Society President, Barbara Phillips. Anyone wanting to donate, time, materials, or money to the dog park may contact Paws for a Good Cause at 254-9055 or PO Box 37; Bentonville, AR 72712.

We'll also have a garage sale 8 AM - 5 PM on July 9th at Leslie Ray's house. Drop off garage sale items tagged with the asking price and FPS at Leslie's house between July 7th and July 8th. Leslie needs volunteers to assist at the garage sale. Questions? Contact us at forpetsake@hotmail.com

June-17 2005 – Beagle Update

The trial is set for July 19th at the Gentry Courthouse. See photos of the beagles here: Beagle Photos. Read about the puppy mill and court hearings here: News Article.

Remember, the Bella Vista and Rogers Animal Shelters are to care for the dogs until the final hearing in August. The shelters will continue to tend to the dogs and their medical needs. As you can imagine Both shelters could certainly use financial assistance in caring for these dogs. To contact the shelters directly, see links below:
