Protect Your Dog from Canine Influenza

There’s nothing you wouldn’t do to protect your dog from harm. And with dog flu, knowledge is the key to prevention.

What is the "Dog Flu"?

Dog flu is a newly identified respiratory illness in dogs. The virus is a new strain of flu that spread from horses to dogs. It is highly contagious.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms are similar to those of kennel cough, which has an effective vaccine. Unfortunately, canine influenza doesn't - at least not yet. If your dog has any of the following symptoms consult your vet immediately:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Cough

How is it transmitted?

The dog flu spreads most easily when dogs are kept in close contact with other dogs. Because it's present in secretions from the nose, it can spread dog-to-dog simply through some friendly sniffing.

Most commonly, canine influenza gets transmitted at:

  • Boarding kennels
  • Doggie day care
  • Dog parks

Is it serious?

Dog flu is very serious. It's very contagious and potentially deadly. And because it's a new disease, your dog has no natural immunity to it. Almost 100 per cent of dogs exposed become infected. There is currently no vaccine available for the dog flu. However, the good news is that it's treatable.

So there's no need to panic - very few deaths have resulted from this virus. With proper care, most dogs with the dog flu are playing fetch again in a matter of weeks.

Protecting your dog

Here are some simple ways to keep your dog safe:

  • Dog flu is most commonly spread at kennels, so try to avoid them if possible. If you're taking a vacation, professional in-home pet sitting is a better alternative.
  • Because dog flu spreads so easily, try to keep your dog away from dogs with cold symptoms.
  • Don't let your dog share toys, food, or water bowls with other dogs as a general rule.

Do your part

If your dog might be sick, see a veterinarian immediately. Also keep him away from other dogs, and public places. We know it's tough because your dog loves to play with his friends, but it's not forever. And they - and their owners - will thank you for it.
