Awareness of Anti-Inflammatory Side-Effects May Save Pets Lives

Excerpts from Letters to the Editor, USA TODAY, April 14, 2005
It is critically important for pet owners to understand the serious risks Rimadyl and other painkillers pose to their animals. I only wish I knew sooner ... my family may have been spared the agonizing loss of our beloved dog, Flake.
Prior to being put on Rimadyl for mild arthritis in one of hi paws, Flake was the happiest, healthiest 11 year-old black Lab on the face of the earl. Barely a month later, he was dead. Our sadness at his loss has since been compounded by anger and outrage as we have learned - only too late - how deadly non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be. Knowing what we know now, we never would have put our dog on the drig, particularly given the fact that Labs appear to be especially susceptible to severe reactions.

Thank heavens Pfizer has put a big warning label on Rimadyl. My Lab, Blossom, took Rimadyl for several months in 1997. From the time she began taking it, she developed a ccough. She was treated with antibiotics and I asked the vet several times whether the Rimadyl could be the cause. Blossom lost weight and finally only ate homemade foods. I lost a great friend when she died. I just had to write to say when I heard of someone giving Rimadyl totheir dog, I warn them. Now, Pfizer is warning everyone.
